Isolated Diesel Systems

Manitoba Hydro supplies four remote communities with Diesel Generated Power. Each year the electrical load in each of these communities continues to grow. A critical review of each community’s requirements is completed annually to improve efficiencies and overall operations.

Total generation output from the four remote prime power diesel sites equaled 13,106,903 kWh’s. Diesel fuel consumed totaled 3,583,664 litres with an overall calculated average generating efficiency of 3.66 kWh’s per liter of fuel burned. 

Brochet generated 2,833,025 kWh’s and had a peak load demand of 535 kW. Fuel consumption totaled 725,580 litres, which resulted in an overall plant efficiency for the 2004/05 fiscal year of 3.90 kWh’s per liter of fuel burned. 867,764 liters of diesel fuel was delivered to Brochet during the winter road haul season.

Lac Brochet generated 3,625,526 kWh’s and had a peak load demand of 654 kW. Fuel consumption totaled 977,163 litres, which resulted in an overall plant efficiency for the 2004/05 fiscal year of 3.71 kWh’s per liter of fuel burned. 988,843 liters of diesel fuel was delivered to Lac Brochet during the winter road haul season.

Shamattawa generated 4,197,364 kWh’s and had a peak load demand of 877 kW. Fuel consumption totaled 1,140,967 litres, which resulted in an overall plant efficiency for the 2004/05 fiscal year of 3.68 kWh’s per liter of fuel burned. 1,395,749 liters of diesel fuel was delivered to Shamattawa during the winter road haul season.

Tadoule Lake generated 2,450,988 kWh’s and had a peak load demand of 482 kW. Fuel consumption totaled 740,224 litres, which resulted in an overall plant efficiency for the 2004/05 fiscal year of 3.31 kWh’s per liter of fuel burned. 661,494 liters of diesel fuel were delivered to Tadoule Lake during the winter road haul season.


Main water lines from the community are protected from freezing by running through a heat exchanger located inside the Tadoule Lake DGS.
