History

Several regulated utilities within Canada serve isolated, off-grid communities. ATCO Electric, BC Hydro, Hydro Quebec, Hydro One, Manitoba Hydro, Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro, Northwest Territories Power Corporation, and Qulliq Energy Corporation/Nunavut Power have off-grid electrical generation facilities and supply electricity to remote communities.

Since 1980, these utilities have held Prime Power Diesel Inter-Utility Conferences once every two years. Past conferences have brought together a broad base of expertise on diesel electric generation and have achieved a level of synergies that have prompted informative discussions and have led to a better understanding of operational and technical matters in prime power diesel locations.

In recent years, utility management and regulators across Canada have shown an increased interest in reviewing costs and rates related to electrical supply in diesel communities.
